Finding Lost Shares
How to Find Old Telstra Shares
Practical steps for tracing old Telstra shares, checking historical records and deciding whether to retain, sell or donate a small parcel.
Telstra's public offers introduced many Australians to direct share ownership. Decades later, some investors still have small parcels recorded at an old address or only remember receiving occasional dividends.
1. Look for historical clues
Check old dividend statements, tax returns, bank statements and shareholder correspondence. Search for Telstra, TLS, the registry's name and any reference beginning with X or I.
2. Work out how the holding is held
If the shares were moved to a broker, they may sit under a HIN. If they remained directly registered, they may sit under an SRN with Telstra's registry. Telstra's registry is MUFG (previously Link Market Services). The paperwork or registry can confirm this.
3. Check your registered name and address
The holding may still be registered under a previous address, maiden name, estate name or joint ownership. Exact matching matters, so list all plausible historical details before contacting the registry.
4. What about unpaid dividends?
Unpaid amounts may have been returned to the company or transferred into an unclaimed money system, depending on the circumstances and passage of time. Search official unclaimed money services and ask the registry about outstanding payments. Moneysmart's unclaimed money register can help.
5. What can you do with a small parcel?
You may retain it, sell it, transfer it to another holder or investigate donating it. Consider fees, tax consequences and administration before choosing.
